Rock & Roll 4: The Dice Game by Christine Ong-Te Events

The last quarter of the year is also the busiest months for the events and wedding industry suppliers.  Coincidentally, just before this time, we enjoin our Chinese brothers and sisters in celebrating the Moon Cake Festival prompting wedding and event coordinator Christine Ong-Te to come up with The Rock & Roll dice game in 2009 at the Penthouse Ballroom of Lancaster Suites.  The first one was a huge success that it became the sought after Party before the actual Party Season starts yearly.

Now on its 4th year, the recently opened Blue Leaf Filipinas, from same group behind the popular Blue Leaf Events Pavilion in Taguig served as the venue to more than 300 wedding industry suppliers.  Seeing the place for the first time, one can't help but admire the modern adaptation of Filipino decors that adorns the halls and landscaped courts.  The event hall was made even more lovelier with flowers from Angel of Hearts and the styling by Flowers and Events by Teddy Manuel.

Unlimited food and drinks were provided by one of catering industry institutions, Josiah's.

I brought home a can of Coke, Pringles, Starbucks Drink and the 2nd Prize Cash!

Kadense provided the entertainment, while fun hosts Abet Rana, Jason Magbanua, Jerome Go, and Max Tiu took turns in giving out raffle prizes to lucky winners.

Attendees were also treated to unlimited booze by Event Shaker, and Photo and Video Booths from Tera, Pose and Print and Slowmoo.tv.

Of course the main highlight of the night was the Dice Game.  Guests were grouped into tables with participants not exceeding 12.  Each participant take turns in rolling the 6 dice trying to get the combination that corresponds to a prize.  Some were lucky to bring home the grand prize per table but everybody went home as winners.

Congratulations to Christine Ong Te Events for once again successfully gathering Wedding Industry Suppliers and providing the much needed break and opportunity to socialize before the peak month starts.

On my previous blog entry, I mentioned about having tasted Chicken Kare-Kare for the first time that uses Almonds instead of Peanuts and decided to make it myself.  This is my version and it turned out better than what I expected.

2. Season the chicken with Salt and Pepper and allow it to lightly brown on both sides before adding the water.
3. Drop the shrimp cubes to dissolve and boil chicken until cooked.
4. Let the water reduce, then add the eggplant slices.
5. Add the kare-kare mix to the broth and allow to thicken.

Santol Bowl Prawn Curry

My bestfriend, the famous event stylist Teddy Manuel is not only creative in executing dream parties but is also daring when it comes to meal preparations.

Here's the recipe for his Prawn Curry flavored and served in a Santol Bowl.   I was'nt able to taste the dish, but let me know if you ever did try preparing it yourself.

Picture and Recipe grabbed from Teddy Manuel of Flowers and Events!

Ingredients:

Medium Size Santol
Ginger
Garlic
Water
Yellow Curry Paste
Prawns, shelled and deveined
Salt and Sugar

How to prepare:

Slice the Santol from the top leaving the stem as the handle.  Prepare the Santol bowl by scooping out the meat and seed. Place the skin and lid in cold water to prevent discoloration. Sauté ginger and garlic then add the chopped santol meat and seeds.  Next, add water and let it simmer for a few minutes  before adding the yellow curry paste. Add the prawns and cook until tender. Season with salt and a little sugar.

Habagat, The Maring Experience

-->
This is the worst and hopefully the last flooding I will experience in my life.  I remember during Ondoy when the water reached the first step of our house and were located on the second floor.

Last Sunday, we went shopping in Divisoria unaware of what will happen in coming hours and days.  We left Lucky Chinatown around 8PM and head towards the direction of Manila City Hall.  The water was gutter deep until we reached the Round Table where the road becomes visible again.  I figured Roxas Boulevard would have a lesser chance of flooding compared to Mabini and Taft Avenue and we took that route on our way to EDSA.  The road from Quirino Grandstand was gutter deep up to the area fronting Malate Church.  From Roxas Boulevard I made a right turn right after the CCP Complex taking the Diosdado Macapagal Avenue.  Traffic was light until we reached EDSA.  The rain was pouring hard and we were inching our way for almost an hour.  That's the time decided to just go back to our house in Makati, which is nearer than our original destination at SM Megamall.

We made a U-turn at EDSA near the Heritage Hotel going back to Roxas Boulevard and turned right at Gil Puyat Avenue.  Surprisingly, the traffic was lighter compared to that of EDSA.  As we approach Dian Street, I noticed that the flood is getting deeper and light vehicles are going back.  I decided to turn right at Dian Street, which was so scary because I can feel the water beneath the car.   I was not really sure where to go at that point.  I just wanted to reach Filmore Street as quick as possible.  Fortunately, the car survived the ordeal and we reached the house around 10PM.

I was originally on leave for the next two days and was glad that work was suspended early that Monday.  I thought that the weather would continue to improve because the flooding subsided.  We were able to go to the Grocery to stock up on supply and I was able to bring my partner to work that evening.

The rain continued in the evening and around 3AM was awakened by the sound of thunder.  When I looked outside, the side streets are already flooded gutter deep and had to move the car to a higher ground around 5:30AM.

Filmore Corner Diesel 5:18 AM

Filmore was still passable at 5:19 AM

Where my car was originally parked.
Soon, the other vehicles parked on the street moved their vehicle.  The neighbors were helping each other moving the cars to higher ground.  This establishment caught my attention.  It's a place where Church service is conducted.  I can understand their need to reserve their parking slots during the day for their activities, but to keep it closed at night is just greedy.  Especially during emergency times like this.

Taken 7:30 AM
My car at 1:30 PM
Its now 4:30 in the afternoon and the rain has been on and off.  The water is still above the sidewalk but its been subsiding.  Hopefully we can see the road as night time falls.  Stay safe everyone.

Financial Wellness with Chinkee Tan

Lately in the office, we are bombarded with trainings after training that I literally have very little output at the end of the week.  Just this Tuesday, I was scheduled again to attend the financial wellness seminar of the famous Chinkee Tan.  I was skeptic at first, but found it to be entertaining and life changing.

Chinkee Tan was popular in TV as one of the Howie Boys of Randy Santiago, but now, he is known for sharing his success stories and financial wellness tips through talks, his radio program and books.

For the past two days, I have been obsessing about gaining my financial freedom.

Among the learnings he shared was Mindset + Action = Reaction.

I believe in the laws of attraction, The Secret, so this is not new to me.  I think, what's holding me back is that I don't dream big.  I am actually limiting myself.

Now am in the process of finding ways to increase my cash flow.  The 4 ways to do it is as follow:

C - Change your lifestyle
A - Always be open-minded for other opportunities
S - Save as much as you can
H - Have a long term perspective

Now, I am trying to change my lifestyle.  Not drastically though.  I am currently tracking my daily expenditure which I will continue for the next 30 days.  This way, I will know how much money I need to support my current needs and wants and what to give up in exchange for savings and investment.

His formula is 50/25/25.  Fifty percent goes to savings, 25 goes to investment and the last 25 goes to your expenses.

I cant believe that as of tonight, I have already spent 878 php.  If I continue spending the same amount daily, I need to earn 26,380, and that does not include the bills and rent.  No wonder I am left with nothing at the end of the month.

I have found a useful apps for Iphone called Money Tracker.

I also like the idea of keeping envelopes.  You set aside the money you need to pay for your bills in different envelopes, the same with the item you need to buy.  You put a date and try to compute how much you need daily in order to buy the item in time.

I really hope this would do me good.  I will just always remind myself that the Right Mindset + Right Action = Right Results!

Wish me luck!

My Inaugural Speech

One of the item in my bucket list is to make a speech in front of a crowd.  My grades studying was not good enough to  entitle me a spot during graduation, so i just hoped that it's my beauty that would give me the opportunity.  I imagined myself walking on stage from end to end as my voice recorded speech plays in the background.   Towards the end, I would wave at the crowd on both sides with teary eyes and slowly confetti falls from the ceiling as I blew kisses to the crowd.

That remains a dream, well at least the speech part was granted sooner.  Having been elected as the new Chapter President for UAP Manila Corinthian, I was privileged to give my inaugural speech to the members that voted for me, witnessed by the National Officers and guest of the organization.

My relationship with the professional organization started even before I graduated.  I was a student assistant before in the late 90's for the convention that was held at Manila Midtown Hotel now Robinsons Place Ermita.  It was my mentor Arch Gabbie Cascante that allowed me to appreciate the world of the professional architects.  I was a confused child growing up but comforted to have chosen the right course and career for me.  Similarly, Arch. Fred Gacutan and Arch. Gil Evasco gave valuable lessons that not only honed my skills but my values as well.

I can still remember the day I  passed the board exam, It was Arch. Gabby who broke the news for me.  I will forever remember him for that.  When finally I had to choose the chapter where I should belong, I had no doubt but to join UAP Manila Corinthian Chapter.

Since then I was an active participant to the organization and finally became a part of the board under the leadership of Arch. Marlou Campaner.  From then I was a part of the board holding various positions.  It was through the chapter that I discovered my talent in hosting, that also became a lucrative career that time.

I would have to apologize for being "pasaway" to Arch. Marc Valencia.  I was young that time and was enjoying the idea of earning on my own that I neglected my duties as an officer.  Everytime I would attend an event, lagi niya sinasabi sakin na pipingutin kita (He would pinch my ear).  That continued, think up to the time of Arch. Ana Valencia.

It was under Arch. Patrick that I started becoming active again up to the time of Arch. Pam Contantino.  It wasn't until the time of Arch. Vhic Idano, that I took my role as a leader seriously.

Throughout the years  I feel so blessed to have worked with a lot of leaders. No less than the pillars of the chapter.

I would also like to make mention of Arch Weng Ramos, Arch Jill Sevilla for introducing me to being a part of the Organizing Committee for the Tagaytay Conference with Arch. Gil Evasco as the Conference Chairman.  That paved the way for my hosting gig from the Chapter to National Events. They also introduced me to great friends.

What I so loved about this Chapter is the way I feel nurtured.  We started out as Ate's and Kuya's that up to now that I'm in my 30's, I still call them that.  This is my second family and my second home.

Its this nurturing, family type atmosphere that I enjoyed that I would want to continue now that I have been elected as the new President.  Palagay ko iniisip nyo na madali sa akin to because I enjoy the attention and the limelight.  I do, but I always stay away from responsibilities.  Before, as I host much of our activities, I would just attend and run the show.  I must give it to my presidents in the past... mahirap pala mag prepare for an event.  I literally brought my own podium from Pasig to Remedios St. because i want this moment to be perfect.

But now, I accepted the challenge, because I feel somehow I have matured, and comforted that my mentors are here supporting me. Like my big personality, I also have a big dreams for the chapter.

My Vision is to be More than the Usual Chapter of UAP. More than the usual simply means, exceeding what is expected.

We are blessed for having great National Leaders for setting the direction for Chapters and Members with the theme "Promoting the Practice, Protecting the Profession and Serve the members.  As one UAP, we just need to align our mission.

Our first mission for the chapter is to provide More Than the Usual Service to Members.  We can do this by simply setting a response time to answer their inquiries.  Exceeding their expectations. This year we are also taking a more holistic approach in enriching our Architect members.

We will being more than the usual GMM's by taking it out of the function rooms and exploring the sights of the country.  We will not only seek professional growth but create activities that will inspire us and boost our creativity.

We will aim to make our members globally competitive with a series of seminars on professional growth, skills, even marketing and communication and social media.

We will be doing more than the Usual Promotion of our Practice.  If the doctors and dentist have medical and dental missions, we will try to do the same by offering free consultations to deserving clients.

We can promote our practice through tie ups with NGO's who is already doing so much for the community.

This is Ms. Rosalie of Bato Balani Foundation who converted this eyesore area in Dumaguete as a Mini Park and Learning Center.  Don't you think as Architects we could have done so much more with her projects.  This are just one of the many opportunities that awaits us architects.

In terms of social media, I for one maintain 3 blogs.  Although its mostly on travel and food, but you cant imagine how wide your audience is.  I have a confession, I was the one who created the FB page No to Senate Bill 2770.  In just a few minutes my followers reached 5K.  Imagine how many people we can influence with just a click of the button.

Also, we need to come up with newsworthy endeavors.  In the work, is a tie-up with Korina Sanchez foundation, although its too early to say, but we are hopeful with the results.

In terms of protecting the profession.  Enforcement of our law and is legalities is more of a National responsibility.  But as individual architects, we still can do so much more.  In my work, I have come across two important marketing term.  The blue ocean and the red ocean strategy.  The read ocean in marketing is attacking your competition head on.  The reason why its called red ocean is that it's always bloody.  With the blue ocean, you create strategies that makes your competition insignificant.  You do this by improving your services and exceeding expectation.

We can do the same with our profession.  Until the law is in full effect, we need to constantly improve ourselves, improve our services and business dealings and ensure that only architects can do what they do.  The paper would become secondary.  Rest assured that the chapter will create activities together with the national to equip us with this.

Architects are known to be able to create something physical with their imagination, and hopefully these visions would materialize for the chapter.  I ask for all the members support as what you have shown my predecessors.

Thank you for all your support and lets be More than the usual architect, and more than the usual chapter towards one UAP.

I would also like to express my gratitude to my family, My Sisters who worked as students to help my parents finance me to school.  My Nanay for being an inspiration and to my Tatay, wherever you are, I know you're proud of me, and to Yuyung for being beside me always.  To God Almighty,  The glory is yours!

Balik Alindog Program: 70 Days After

January 18, 2013 was the day I committed myself to my 70 day Balik Alindog Program. Back then my measurements were:

Weight: 76.5kg
Waist: 37.5inches

My measurement today:
Weight: 72.5kg
Waist: 34 inches

Lost 8.8 lbs and 3.5 inches off my waist in 70 days.

I would say adherance is about 80%, the reason why my TSC score is not as good:

18 minute running distance: 2.7km vs. 4.8km target
Max Push-up: 50 vs. 50 target
Max Pull-up: 0 vs. 20 target.

This means that i need to balance my strength training focusing on arms, back and shoulders. Also, i need to push myself more in the running category.

Just renewed my gym membership, and I'm looking forward to the next 70 day result!

The Secret to Great Health

I have a lot to be thankful for my current employer.  One significant thing, is that they were the one who introduced me to The Secret.

It has been my strategy in coping up with a lot of challenges in my life.

The summary of learning from the official website is enough to guide you through the process.

Health

You are a magnet attracting to you all things, via the signal you are emitting through your thoughts and feelings.
To open yourself up and become a powerful magnet to wellness and health from wherever you are now:

  • Love yourself! Deeply, profoundly! Make lists of all the wonderful things about you. Add to it every day.
  • Free yourself of any past resentments or disappointments you may be holding about you.
  • Let go of any and all resentments from the past you may be holding of everyone and everything.
  • See yourself as completely well in your mind and visualize yourself doing things in a complete state of perfect health.
  • Do not speak of your illness, or disease with others.
  • Love and appreciate everything and everyone, and especially yourself.
  • Know you have the power within you to heal yourself.
  • Never criticize or blame yourself or anyone else for anything.
  • Be grateful for the wellbeing that is coming to you.
  • See yourself as only well.
  • Be happy, knowing that in your state of happiness your body is healing itself.
  • As you appreciate, as you love, as you are happy, as you are grateful, you are summoning wellbeing and it is pouring through your body and disease is vanishing in the moment.
  • Laugh! Hire funny movies or recall any memories that make you laugh. Laugh your way back to health.
  • Make lists every day of all the things you are grateful for, including being grateful for your healing and complete wellbeing.
  • You must do whatever you can to remove your attention from disease.
  • Distract yourself from thoughts of disease, and put all of your focus and attention on doing things that make you feel good.
  • Make your happiness the number one thing in your life.
  • Resist nothing, love everything!
  • Know that there is no such thing as incurable.
  • As you love completely and feel the joy within you, disease cannot exist.
  • Know and accept that you are perfect as you are right now.

My Personal Vision Board

Last January 3, I posted my new years resolution.
A few days after, we were given an assignment at work to make our individual 2013 vision board, Here's mine!

Live like a beauty queen.

I'm not joining any pageants.  What I find inspiring is the discipline to attain their goals.  The hard work and diet and constant learning.  Janine Tugunon's success from her National Pageant up to the bagging the 1st runner slot at Miss Universe 2013 is a product of her dedication to her dream.  I am committing myself to mine.

Travel More

We were mobile on the first day of the year having spent new years day in Cebu and back to Manila the day after.  Just last weekend, we went to Borawan in Quezon Province.  I want this year to be a year of discoveries.  I want to visit places I've never been.  But, I wouldn't mind going back to my favorite places.

Be Fit

I always enroll myself to a gym membership at the start of the year.  I always start with my 70 day program, but an accident February of last year made me quit 35 days into the program.  I intend to complete the training this year.  I was able to enroll myself just this afternoon, and I intend to start on Monday.

Maintain a Strong Relationship with Love Ones

I want to be a better person.  A good boyfriend to my partner, a good son to my mother, a brother to my sisters, and the best uncle to my nephews.  I want my decisions be based on what would make them happy and be proud of me.  I don't want to do things I will eventually regret and cause distance with them.  I want to be the bestfriend to all the people I know, and an inspiration to my staff and peers.

Be Healthy

Being healthy is different from being fit.  I will never get sick, and promise to take my vitamins and eat healthy.  I will be nicotine free in 2013.

To Save, Earn, Win, my first Million

I'm not getting younger and intend to start being financially secured.  Things are looking good this year.  Just yesterday, we were given cash gifts in celebration of our CEO's birthday.  I was able to start 3 of my goals with the cash gift.  Enroll myself in the gym and pay for my airfare for the Architects assembly in February.

Be Productive

Waking up early is a challenge for me.  I'm not promising to be on time at work, but I intend to accomplish as many things in a day.

Join More Outreach

I am connected to a lot of advocacy groups and intend to do more of that this year!

Best Groom's Speech, Best Groom

I have been hosting weddings for years now.  And during those years, I have been a witness to a lot of speeches.  I can help but get emotional, especially when the couple are lost for words, in tears, but just very overwhelmed and unaware of how to express the joy they're feeling.

Watching this video, made me realize how fortunate I am, to be a part of their very special celebration of love.  To all the couples who gave me the opportunity to host their wedding, Thank You!

2. Be Fit

I was so surprised to find out that holy week would come early this year. The last weekend of march.  That means I have to start my 70 day program not later January 20.  I was able to grab myself a copy of the heart of the champion program.  Actually I started following the program same time last year.  But an accident in the office created an injury that made it difficult for me to run so I stopped.  Hopefully this year, I will be able to complete the program.

3. To save

I will try to limit my splurging on travels.  I will sleepover the hotel more and seek all opportunity to earn extra income, LEGALLY!

4. Stay Healthy

I promise not to forget my daily doze of Vitamin C at least 2000mg. 1 Multivitamins, at least 2 Fish and my latest addition Lysine, its suppose to prevent cancer.  I also intend to quit smoking this year.  Today, I had 5 half consumed sticks.

Hotdogs and Instant Pancit Canton for Noche Buena

Since I will be leaving for Zamboanga via Cebu on Christmas Day, my housemate and I opted not to prepare anything for Noche Buena.  I still have some cookies and desserts in the refrigerator in case an unexpected guest pops up.  Besides, I'm still full from eating my way around Pampanga early during the day.

Instead, I prepared an Instant Pancit Canton (3 packs) and the 2 remaining Jumbo hotdogs in the freezer!

Merry Christmas!

Counting My Calories Again

Low Calorie Chicken for Lunch
Saging na Saba for Merienda
So much for counting, we had vegetable kare-kare, liempo, and chicken fingers with unlimited rice for dinner!

Hello 2025

Its been a year since I last updated my blog. So much has happened over the course of the year. I started the year in Toronto, Canada. I was...
