Whale Encounter in Oslob and the Attractions South of Cebu City

Since my partner moved to Cebu for work, I have been on the lookout for every opportunity to visit him, like long weekends, and extended holidays.  I’m always on standby to catch promo fares, and the recent declaration of September 25 is something I would not miss.  Fortunately, there are more than 10 flights a day and the fares are still reasonable even on last minute.

For this visit, I originally planned of making a side trip to Bohol but found it too expensive considering that we still need to book a room, pay for the tour on a very limited time.  Instead, I opted to go to Oslob.  According to other sites, the whale encounter is relatively short, 30 minutes to be exact, that’s when we decided to rent a car and drive there.  We can use the remaining time in the afternoon to check out the other sites South of Cebu City.

After searching the net, we found Safe Ride Van and Car, who’s willing lend us on a short notice a small car for only 1500 pesos that's good for 24 hours.

We went home early that Saturday night to make the most of our destination.  We found ourselves at their office right in from of SM Cebu at 8AM.  Oslob usually takes 2-3 hours, and we want to catch the last Whale Watching encounter at 12:30.

Oslob is less than 200 kilometers away, but because the roads are narrow, prepared to overtake or phase yourself with the tricycle in front of you.  We decided to head straight to Oslob, and take our time on our way back to the city instead.

Armed with Waze, we made it to the Whale Encounter around 11 AM.  Don’t be deceived with the location it's pointing you. It will lead you to a resort that usually charge more.  They have a standard rate for tourists.  It's 500 pesos for Filipinos.  I’m guessing it’s almost double for foreigners.  We made it just in time to join another group for the briefing.  After that, you need to pay at the counter, where you take your receipt to the dispatcher.  Since we had a car, we used it as our changing room before boarding the boat.

Most blogs recommend that you take the earliest trip to avoid the crowd of tourists mid morning.  We realized that our timing was also good, because, we were last few groups in the water.

I rented an underwater camera to document the encounter.  I did not drive for 2 hours with nothing to show for our trip.  It’s just the two of us in one boat.  Our boatmen we’re really accommodating and would instruct you what to do to get that perfect shot.

On the boat, we were able to catch giant shadows swimming below.  Our guide then instructed us to get into the water.   The Whale sharks follow a certain boat that feeds them, and when they pass you, one boatman will push you underwater, while the other takes the shot.  They we’re so experienced at it that even you struggle in swimming, you look like a professional snorkeler.  After a few dips, it was our time to go back.  We were the last boat on the water and had the Whale sharks to ourselves.

I did not waste time on retrieving our photos.  After rinsing on the open shower and changing in the car, I was at the store to have it downloaded on a CD.

We were done around lunchtime.  We did not eat, because we had an invite from a friend who lives in Argao.

On our way back, we made a stop to take a photo of a church in Baljoon.  Considered as a National treasure, it’s one of the Baroque Churches being considered for the UNESCO Heritage Sites.

We should have entered, but since, our lunch invitation is waiting, I just took a shot of the façade.

The next town we visited was Sibunga known for the Simala Church.  Simala Church is perched on a hill connected with gothic bridges.  It reminded me Hogwarts from the famous Harry Potter novel.  Waze lead us to the road leading to the church, but directed us to a monastery.  You can ask anybody on the roadside the correct location.

They follow a strict dress code and we voluntarily not enter the main church for the ongoing mass, since I’m in a tank top and shorts.  I was able to light candles and see the many testimonials of patrons whose wish have been granted that lined the corridors.  The faith of the Cebuano’s is truly inspiring.

The next town we would visit is Argao.  We missed visiting the Church because we don’t want to keep our host waiting.  We were in time for their Fiesta, and a feast is waiting for us.

After stuffing ourselves with Lechon among many others, we were on the road again this time to visit the heritage town of Carcar.

I was able to tour Carcar on a previous trip, but I wanted to show it to my partner.  Carcar is known as the Marikina of Cebu with their thriving shoe industry in the past.  They were slumped with the increase of cheap imported products.  But in spite of this, Carcar remained known for their Chicharon (crispy pork cracklings).  The church is also popular, and the old houses that they try to preserve.

Carcar houses are different, since they reflect the American influences.

After a short stop at the church, we made our way to the center of town to grab ourselves a few bags of their famous Chicharon.

The traffic from here to the city gets really bad.  We found ourselves stuck for long periods, but made it to the South Reclamation area just in time for dinner.

We took the opportunity to check out Lantaw.  We were able to visit their mountain location on a previous visit, and this time, we want to check out the seaside view.  There’s nothing much to see at night, and the place gets crowded fast especially the tables near the shore.  The food was great just the same.

After dinner, we decided to return the car, since its closer, and just take the cab back home.

Is renting a car is cheaper?  Not necessarily, but it has its advantages.  You can use it as your changing room and you can take stop anywhere, bring as much as you like and explore the other attractions South of Cebu.

Exploring North on my next visit.

Ramen Cool, Best Lunch Deal in Pasig

Would you believe that I got all of these for only 200 pesos, as part of their daily lunch promo?  The set includes fried rice, gyoza (that was originally 3 pcs.), ramen, kani salad, slices of egg roll and iced coffee.  I'm already excited to check what they have for lunch today!

Foodie Finds: Momma's Boy, San Antonio, Makati

Our neighbouring Baranggay San Antonio in Makati, is my favourite dinner destination because of the variety of "Hole in the Wall" foodie places in the area.  As I was driving home one evening, I chanced upon a brightly lit entrance. Initially I thought its a drinking place because that time, all i see on the tables were beer bottles.

A few weeks later, I was in the look out for a place to eat after gym, and the alley I took coming from Yakal St. led me to their entrance.  I decided to give it a try.

If not for the tables, I would have mistaken it for a Spa with all the Balinese accents.

The Asian Decors continued to the interiors, with some Thai, and Indonesian Mandalas.

Upon inspection of their Menu, they actually offer Western and Asian Fusion Food.

The appetiser selection seems good, but I'm going for something a bit heavy and tried their Adobo Pasta.  I find them a bit expensive, especially for a solo foodie like me, compared to the other restaurants in the area, but the taste, presentation and ambiance makes it worth the hard earned peso.

What I found cheap was their beer at 50 pesos.  That explains the group of customers I saw during my first sight of the place.

They have low tables on the indoor dining area for big groups to lounge.

I would definitely come back to sample their appetiser with a bottle of beer, or maybe a bucket.

Boracay Pubcrawl, A Definite Must Try

Boracay is my favourite beach.  Needless to say, I couldn't count anymore how many times I have visited the Island.  I was fortunate to have seen it, when there were very little development along the White Beach, and now getting lost figuring out where my favourite establishments went.

I have tried Island Hopping, Paraw Sailing, Banana Boat and others.  I was never attracted to taking the ATV's, Para-sailing, nor Kite Boarding.  Most of the time, I'm on a budget and would rather spend  my money on beers during happy hour watching the sunset.

For the National Heroes Day Long weekend, I found myself on the Island again.  I took the opportunity of getting myself 4 days of vacation adding a leave to the extended weekend.  I originally booked for a 5 day stay, but the pressure of work forced me to go back to the city a day early.

Going back to Boracay's evolving activities...

I have a day to myself before my partner arrives from Cebu, and while waiting, I am back to my usual routine.  Wake up around noon, lunch at D'mall, afternoon tea at Real Coffee, Happy Hour at Tpaz.

I would have to say, the highlight of this visit would be joining Boracay Pubcrawl.   You can't really miss them.  They're everywhere along the beach wearing the iconic yellow shirt.  If you book early, you can enlist for 790 pesos.  I secured my and my partner for the Saturday slot.

That Saturday afternoon, we started drinking early.  We were having Long Island at Red Coconut around 2PM, followed by beers at Tpaz while waiting for the Crawl to Start.  We were a bit Tipsy, when the Crawl Captain informed us of the rules.  No drinking using the right hand, which I violated and made me finish what was left of my red horse bottle on the spot.

We were told to ask 3 fellow Pubcrawlers of unusual things about them.  Ofcourse, by this time my confidence, fueled by the alcohol that afternoon is up the roof.  We were guided to the beach for the group picture taking and orientation.  we missed some of the stops and games, because I have to meet my partner who just arrived.

After settling him to our hotel, we caught up with the group at Boracay Regency.  I was having another beer while waiting for them.

I remember dancing, until they ushered us to the D'mall to board a tricycle to another bar which I don't remember.  After another bottle, and few minutes of dancing, they took us to Club Paraw, which would be our last stop.

I remember making friends and laughing so hard and losing it in a good way.

Boracay Pubcrawl is a definite must try every time you're in Boracay.  I know I'm doing it again.

Weekend to Boracay on a Budget

Going to Boracay from Manila nowadays is so convenient.  You have the options to fly via Kalibo or Caticlan, and the boat ride to the island operates 24/7.

If you're on a tight budget, you don't have to wait for promo fares.  My itinerary would only cost you less than 2500 pesos round trip.  With an additional 500 pesos, you can get a decent stay for the night.

If you get off from work, around 5PM on a Friday, you can still catch the 2GO ferry that would take you straight to Caticlan, leaving daily at 9PM that would take less than 10 hours.

In case you missed it, your next option is break down your transportation taking the RORO route. You first need to catch a bus going to Batangas Pier and purchase the next departing ferry ticket to Calapan, Mindoro.   The ferry ride is about 2 hours.  Upon reaching Calapan port, you can take a Van to Roxas Port.  They tend to cramp every inch of the vehicle on this leg of the trip, so be prepared to get squeezed on this 4 hour land journey.  Upon reaching Roxas Port, you need to once again catch the earliest departing ferry to Caticlan, Aklan.  The ferry ride takes 4-6 hours depending on the Shipping Line.  From Caticlan Port, you need to take the RORO exit, and then enter again taking the Boracay bound entrance after paying the Environmental and Terminal Fee.  The boat ride only takes 15 minutes.  The entire RORO journey is around 12-16 hours.  You can use your time on the ferry ride to rest and reserve your energy for a compressed Boracay trip.

Your one way fare would be around 1200 pesos.  You might have to spend more on the cup noodles and water being sold in the Ferry Vessels.

For your return trip, you may opt to ride 2GO again, but they depart early morning Daily leaving you just a full day on the island.  You can reverse your RORO trip and leave Caticlan around 2PM to make it to work Monday morning.

This option is also good, in case you want to forego your flight and extend your stay.

Your next problem would be accommodation.  AirBnb choices for Boracay would offers as low as 450 pesos per night for a shared room.

Manila to Batangas:  167 pesos
Batangas to Calapan:  192 pesos plus 30 pesos terminal fee
Calapan to Roxas:  180 pesos
Roxas to Caticlan:  400 pesos plus 15 pesos terminal fee
Caticlan to Boracay:  25 pesos plus 100 pesos terminal fee plus 75 pesos terminal fee
Total:  1,184 pesos

You can also use this itinerary in case P-noy suddenly declares a Monday or a Friday a holiday and you don't want to be stuck in Manila.

As first time visitors of Singapore with a Philippine Passport, and having Malaysia as an entry point,  they took time in documenting our arrival.  We were taken to the office for fingerprints and a few questions.  They were polite the entire time though.

With the growing numbers of Filipinos working there, It's understandable.

Back in Boracay After 3 Long Years

After three long years, I finally had the chance to return to Boracay. Since it had been quite a while, I wanted to make this visit extra sp...
